St Louis is the second-largest city in Missouri and boasts the most populous metropolitan area in the state. Its eastern border is defined by the Mississippi River which makes up the border between Missouri and Illinois. St Louis is served by Interstates 70, 44, 55, 64 and 270.



OUR HISTORY

Our city was founded in 1764 by French fur-traders Pierre Laclede and Auguste Chouteau, becoming a major port and trade center on the Mississippi River after the Louisiana Purchase. By the late nineteenth century St. Louis had become the fourth-largest city in the United States, seceding from St. Louis County in 1877 and becoming the independent American city it remains today. After peaking at nearly 900,000 people in 1950, its population began to decline to a current level of 318,069 by 2010.


LOCAL CLIMATE

Due to its location near the center of the country, St Louis is a city that experiences four distinct seasons. Spring is the wettest time of the year, transitioning to warm summers with highs that can reach 90 degrees. Fall is mild with the occasional shower or snow flurry falling by early November. Temperatures can dip below freezing in the winter, with an average of 17.7 inches of snow per season.

The St Louis Public School District operates more than 75 schools, including several magnet schools, catering to approximately 75,000 students. In addition, there are a number of charter schools and private institutions for additional education options. Those seeking higher-learning opportunities can attend Saint Louis University, Harris-Stowe State University or Washington University in St Louis.
